The Openbox SX9 4K Combo on the ALi M3327 chip officially supports OpenATV 6.4 and OpenPLi 8.x. The current firmware version — is 03.02.96. The image takes up 1.5-2 GB, and the procedure via USB fits into 15-20 minutes without any special cable.

Which firmware to choose for the Openbox SX9: OpenATV or OpenPLi?

Both are built on Enigma2, but place their accents differently. OpenATV updates monthly — each release carries security patches. OpenPLi is more conservative: after plugin updates it „falls apart” less often. For FTA viewing and a basic CI module both options are equivalent. If you actively use Oscam or a bunch of third-party plugins — OpenATV gives more room to maneuver.

Version Date Size Changes
OpenATV 6.4 (03.02.96) 2024-11 ~1.7 GB DVB-S2X 8PSK support, CI patch
OpenPLi 8.x (03.02.96) 2024-10 ~1.6 GB EPG stabilization, freeze fixes
OpenATV 6.3 2024-05 ~1.6 GB Basic SX9 support
OpenPLi 7.x 2023-12 ~1.5 GB First official release for the SX9

What is needed before flashing the Openbox SX9?

  • A USB flash drive from 4 GB, formatted in FAT32.
  • A firmware image in .zip or .nfi format — unpack it to the root of the flash drive.
  • Stable power: do not flash from a mains supply with voltage fluctuations.
  • A backup of the channel list through the System > Backup menu.

The SX9 supports DVB-S2X on the 950-2150 MHz band with 8PSK 23/25 modulation. After changing the firmware the transponder settings are reset — save them separately, otherwise you will have to scan everything from scratch.

How to flash the Openbox SX9 via USB: step-by-step guide

  1. Format the flash drive in FAT32. Unpack the firmware archive to the root — the usb_update.nfi file must be visible without subfolders.
  2. Turn off the tuner with the button on the body (not the remote).
  3. Insert the flash drive into the rear USB port of the SX9.
  4. Hold the OK button on the front panel and turn on the power at the same time.
  5. Release the button after the USB Update text appears on the display.
  6. Wait for the writing to finish. The indicator will blink for 10-15 minutes. Do not cut the power.
  7. The tuner will restart automatically. Remove the flash drive after the first start.
  8. Go through the first-start wizard: language, time zone, satellite scanning.

We checked the full cycle on a bench with the Openbox SX9 and OpenATV 6.4 — flashing took 17 minutes with a Kingston USB 3.0 drive in the receiver's USB 2.0 port. In our case there was no difference in time between the 2.0 and 3.0 drives at all: the bottleneck is the tuner's port itself, not the speed of the medium.

What is the difference in settings after OpenATV and OpenPLi?

OpenATV launches the Softcam Manager right after installation. OpenPLi requires manual installation via ipkg. The menus differ in the arrangement of items, but the Enigma2 logic is the same everywhere. Is it worth migrating from one firmware to another just for the interface? No — be guided by which plugins you need and how stably they hold up there.

How to install plugins after flashing the SX9?

Go to Menu > Plugins > Download plugins. For operation, a network connection via LAN or a Wi-Fi adapter is needed. Oscam, CCcam, E2iPlayer are installed with the standard package manager. After installing Oscam, check for conflicts with the CI module: the SX9 sometimes does not see the CAM after the first start — re-removing and reinserting the module solves the problem in most cases.

What to do if the tuner does not turn on

If the SX9 hangs on the splash screen or has turned into a „brick” after flashing — do not panic. Act sequentially:

  • Remove the flash drive, disconnect the power for 30 seconds, turn it on again without the drive.
  • If the display shows BOOT without progress — repeat the USB-flashing procedure with another image (try OpenPLi instead of OpenATV or vice versa).
  • Check that the usb_update.nfi file is not corrupted: compare the MD5 sum with the official value.
  • Use another flash drive — the SX9 bootloader simply does not recognize some Kingston and SanDisk models.
  • If no option worked — JTAG or service mode via RS-232 is needed.

FAQ: Openbox SX9 firmware

Can the SX9 be flashed without disassembling the body?
Yes. The whole procedure is performed through the USB port on the rear panel without opening the body.
How long does flashing the Openbox SX9 take?
15-20 minutes from the start of writing to the first boot of the new firmware.
Are the channels preserved after flashing?
No. The channel list and settings are reset. Make a backup through the menu before starting the flashing.
OpenATV 6.4 or OpenPLi 8.x — which is more stable on the SX9?
OpenPLi 8.x gives fewer failures when working with CI modules. OpenATV updates more often and supports a wider set of plugins.
Does the SX9 support 4K after flashing OpenATV?
Yes. The ALi M3327 chip supports 4K H.265/HEVC, and OpenATV 6.4 fully uses this capability.
Warning!

Before updating, save important data. Do not turn off the device during the update — this may damage it.
