The current Openbox S3 Mini firmware — is version 277. The receiver is built on the ALi3601 chip with DVB-S2 HD support, has 64 MB of flash memory and 256 MB of RAM. Installation via USB takes 3-5 minutes without additional equipment.
Which firmware version is current for the Openbox S3 Mini?
The current verified version — is 277. Previous releases had problems with the stability of transponder scanning in the 10.7-12.75 GHz range — the tuner could hang right in the middle of a search. Version 277 eliminates freezing when switching between FTA channels and fixes work with the Ku band 11.7-12.75 GHz.
| Version | Date | Size | Changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 277 | 2024-03 | ~58 MB | DVB-S2 stability, freeze fix |
| 276 | 2023-11 | ~57 MB | Bootloader update, support for new transponders |
| 275 | 2023-07 | ~57 MB | FTA-scanning fix |
| 274 | 2023-02 | ~56 MB | Basic release for the ALi3601 |
What to check before flashing?
The ALi3601 chip is sensitive to power interruptions during writing. Before starting: check the power supply voltage (it should be exactly 12 V), format the USB drive in FAT32, make sure the firmware file is not archived. On a test bench with the S3 Mini we recorded: the tuner simply does not see drives with the exFAT file system — only FAT32 without options.
How to install the firmware on the Openbox S3 Mini?
- Copy the firmware file to the root of the USB drive (FAT32, capacity up to 32 GB).
- Turn off the receiver with the button on the rear panel.
- Insert the USB into the appropriate connector on the front panel.
- Hold the
MENUbutton on the front panel and turn on the power. - Wait for the file-selection menu to appear on the screen.
- Select the firmware file with the navigation buttons, confirm with
OK. - Do not turn off the power until the writing is complete — the indicator will stop blinking.
- The receiver will restart automatically. After the first start, perform a reset to factory settings through
Menu → System → Factory Settings.
When flashing via USB 2.0 in our case the whole process took 4 minutes 20 seconds from confirmation to the first boot.
How to check that the installation succeeded?
Go to Menu → Information → Software Version. The „Software Version” field should show 277. If the number is different — the firmware was not written. Repeat the procedure with another USB drive.
Can an alternative firmware be installed?
Officially — no. The ALi3601 chip has bootloader protection that rejects images without a valid manufacturer signature. An attempt to flash a third-party image will turn the receiver into a brick — recovery via USB will no longer help.
What to do if the tuner does not turn on
If after flashing the S3 Mini shows no signs of life — disconnect the USB, cut the receiver's power for 30 seconds, turn it on again. The indicator does not light at all? Check the power supply with a multimeter: the norm is 12 V ±5%. If the power is fine but the screen is black, try a forced recovery: hold MENU + OK simultaneously while turning on with the USB in the slot. The receiver should enter emergency boot mode and again offer a file selection.
