Echostar 10 is a geostationary satellite operated by EchoStar Corporation at orbital position 110° W. This position is one of the key anchor points in the Dish Network fleet for coverage of the continental United States. The spacecraft operates exclusively in the Ku-band and delivers digital broadcasting to millions of subscribers throughout North America.
Launch and Platform
The satellite launched on 14 March 2006 from Baikonur on a Proton-M rocket. Manufacturer: Space Systems/Loral, SSL 1300 platform. At the time, this was one of the most reliable geostationary platforms in the industry: high electrical power and flexible payload enabled the placement of 32 Ku-band transponders with significant aggregate throughput capacity. Design lifetime: 15 years.
Coverage Zones
Echostar 10 generates three regional beams, each oriented towards a specific part of the American audience:
| Beam | Coverage | Typical Antenna Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| CONUS | Continental United States (48 states) | 45–60 cm |
| Alaska Beam | Alaska | 75–90 cm |
| Hawaii Beam | Hawaiian Islands | 75–90 cm |
The CONUS beam power is sufficient for reliable reception on a 45–60 cm antenna in most states. In Alaska and Hawaii, due to higher elevation angle and lower signal levels, a dish of 75 cm or larger is recommended.
Reception of Echostar 10 in Ukraine or any point in Europe is physically impossible. Position 110° W lies below the horizon relative to our region. No antenna, regardless of diameter, can change this.
Transponder Capacity and Broadcasting Standards
32 active transponders operate in the 12.2–12.7 GHz band — the standard DBS segment for the United States. Broadcasting is conducted in DVB-S and DVB-S2 with QPSK and 8PSK modulation. The high power of the SSL 1300 platform is precisely why Dish Network subscribers across most of the CONUS can get by with a compact 45-centimetre dish even in moderate cloud cover. Overall, the database contains 44 channels in HD and SD formats.
Packages and Conditional Access
Echostar 10 is a purely commercial satellite. There are no open FTA channels here. All content is encrypted with the Nagravision system. On board are transmitted:
- Dish Network HD packages — news, sports, entertainment, movies;
- Dish Network SD packages;
- Regional broadcasters for individual states — local news and sports channels.
Content can only be viewed with an active Dish Network subscription and a certified receiver within the United States.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Echostar 10 be received in Ukraine or Europe?
No. The satellite at 110° W is below the horizon for any point in Europe — this is a matter of geometry, not antenna size.
What channels does Echostar 10 broadcast?
Exclusively encrypted Dish Network packages: HD and SD channels and regional broadcasting for various US states. No FTA channels.
What platform is the satellite built on?
Space Systems/Loral 1300 (SSL 1300) with a design lifetime of 15 years.
How many transponders does Echostar 10 have?
32 active Ku-band transponders providing transmission of 44 channels in the database.
