Flashing the Eurosky ES-15 via RS-232 — is the only effective way to revive a tuner that does not respond to the remote and is dead-frozen at startup. The latest official version — is 2.81, released in 2019. The file compatibility is determined by the chip: ALi M3503 and ALi M3601 require different firmwares, and mixing them up — is the most common mistake.

What is RS-232 mode and why does it save you from a brick?

RS-232 — is a hardware interface right on the tuner's board. It remains active even when the main bootloader is corrupted. A USB update via the menu will not start on a dead device. RS-232 bypasses this problem: writing goes directly to the flash memory, skipping any bootloader logic.

What cable and adapter are suitable for the ES-15?

A DB9 or USB-to-COM adapter is needed. Verified chips: PL2303 and CH340. Adapters based on the CP2102 also work, but are rarely found in retail. The port speed depends on the board revision: 115200 baud for the vast majority of units, 9600 baud — for early batches. We checked on a bench with an ES-15 of revision v1.3: the transfer at 115200 went without a single CRC error over the entire session.

The pinout on the board: TX, RX, GND. Cross TX-RX between the tuner and the adapter — without this the program will simply not get a response from the device.

What firmware versions exist and which to choose?

Version Date Size Main changes
2.69 2016 ~8 MB Basic T2, stable FTA
2.75 2017 ~8 MB Fixed freezes during scanning
2.81 2019 ~8 MB Improved T2, fixed IPTV stream

For T2 reception take 2.81. Version 2.69 holds up more confidently on old hardware with the M3503 — if 2.81 gives artifacts on the image, this is the first candidate for a rollback.

What software to install on the PC?

For flashing, AliDownloader or the proprietary utility from Eurosky is used. AliDownloader is suitable for both chips. Install the adapter driver before connecting the tuner — Windows often ignores the COM port without it. Check the port number in Device Manager: usually COM3 or COM4.

How to connect the tuner and enter flashing mode?

  1. Disconnect the tuner from the 220 V mains.
  2. Connect the RS-232 cable between the tuner and the PC.
  3. Open AliDownloader, select the COM port and the speed 115200 baud.
  4. Specify the path to the binary firmware file (.abs or .bin).
  5. Press Start in the utility.
  6. Apply power to the tuner — the transfer will begin automatically.
  7. Wait for 100% progress. Do not cut the power during writing.

In our case, transferring 8 MB via USB 2.0 took about 4 minutes at 115200 baud. Via USB 3.0 the time is not reduced — the throughput rests against the physical limits of the RS-232 interface itself.

What to do with CRC errors and timeouts?

A CRC error most often points to a defective cable or a mixed-up pinout. Check the TX-RX crossing. A timeout at startup means the tuner did not enter boot mode: apply power 1-2 seconds later after pressing Start. If the utility does not see the port at all — reinstall the CH340 or PL2303 driver.

What to do if the tuner does not turn on

After flashing, the device may stay silent for 30-60 seconds — the flash is initializing. Wait. If after a minute the screen is blank: match the firmware version with the chip marking (M3503 or M3601). Mixed-up files give exactly this symptom — the tuner starts and freezes immediately. Repeat the flashing with the correct file. If even after that the result is nil — measure the voltage on the power board: the cause often lies in swollen capacitors of the power supply, not in the firmware.

How to check the result after the update?

Go to Menu → System Information. The firmware version should match the uploaded file. Is it worth saving the channel list before the update? Yes — in versions 2.75 and 2.81 the database format is compatible, but playing it safe will not hurt. After checking, perform a reset to factory settings through the service menu to clear outdated transponder parameters.

FAQ

Can the ES-15 be flashed without RS-232, via USB?
Only if the tuner boots and opens the update menu. From a brick — only RS-232.
How to identify the chip, ALi M3503 or M3601?
Open the cover and find the marking on the large chip next to the tuner. M3503 — is the older revision, M3601 — the newer one.
Which baud speed is correct for the ES-15?
115200 for most units. If the transfer does not start — try 9600.
Does firmware from the ES-20 fit the ES-15?
No. Firmware files are tied to the model and the chip. Installing someone else's firmware is guaranteed to produce a brick.
How long does flashing via RS-232 take?
From 3 to 6 minutes depending on the file size and the port speed.
Warning!

Before updating, save important data. Do not turn off the device during the update — this may damage it.
