Directv 12 occupies orbital position 103° W and is part of the extensive satellite infrastructure of DIRECTV — one of North America's largest pay television operators. The spacecraft was built on the SSL 1300 platform by Space Systems/Loral, NORAD ID: 36131.
Launch and Platform
On 20 July 2015, Falcon 9 lifted Directv 12 from Launch Complex SLC-40 at Cape Canaveral. This was the first commercial Falcon 9 mission carrying a full-scale geostationary telecommunications payload — the launch confirmed the launch vehicle's capability to handle heavy spacecraft to GEO.
The SSL 1300 platform is well-established in the industry: reliable, scalable and designed for extended operational life. Directv 12's design life is 15 years of active service.
Coverage Areas and Reception in Ukraine
All satellite beams are directed westward from the prime meridian. No increase in antenna diameter will change this fact — the signal physically does not reach Ukrainian or European territory.
| Beam / Region | Coverage | Typical Antenna Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| CONUS (Primary) | Continental United States | 45–60 cm |
| Alaska | State of Alaska | 60–75 cm |
| Hawaii | Hawaiian Islands | 60–75 cm |
| Caribbean Basin | Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands | 60–75 cm |
| Ukraine / Europe | No coverage | Reception impossible |
For satellite reception in Ukraine, refer to Astra 19.2° E, Astra 28.2° E or Eutelsat 13° E and 16° E.
Transponders and Frequency Band
Directv 12 operates exclusively in the Ka-band. Compared to Ku-band, Ka-band allows for more compact receiving antennas with higher throughput — which is why it is efficient for HD and Ultra HD streams. In practice, DIRECTV subscribers in the USA use specialised Ka-LNB converters that are incompatible with standard Ku-band equipment.
The database registers 21 active transponders. Broadcasting is conducted in DVB-S2 standard with QPSK and 8PSK modulation. The total number of channels is 123 positions, predominantly in HD format.
Content and Access
All Directv 12 content is distributed in encrypted form as part of DIRECTV's paid packages. There is no open FTA broadcasting.
- HD packages with full US network channel lineup
- Sports broadcasting: NFL Sunday Ticket, ESPN, regional sports networks
- Premium channels: HBO, Showtime, Starz
- Local broadcasting for major US markets
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Directv 12 be received in Ukraine?
No. The 103° W position and beam direction exclude any reception across Ukrainian and European territory — regardless of antenna diameter.
What frequency band does Directv 12 use?
Ka-band exclusively. DIRECTV subscribers in the USA use specialised Ka-converters that are incompatible with standard Ku-band equipment.
How many transponders and channels are on board?
21 transponders and 123 channels, predominantly HD, all in closed access as part of DIRECTV subscription packages.
What launch vehicle was used for Directv 12?
Falcon 9 by SpaceX, 20 July 2015, Cape Canaveral, SLC-40. The first commercial Falcon 9 mission with a geostationary telecommunications satellite.
