EchoStar 15 hangs above the Pacific Ocean at position 119.0° W — and this determines its entire operational specificity. The operator is American EchoStar Corporation, with capacity ultimately serving the Dish Network platform. For viewers outside North America, the satellite simply does not exist: the elevation angle from any point in Europe is negative, and there is nowhere to point an antenna.
Launch and Platform
The satellite was launched into geostationary orbit on 27 December 2010 by a Proton-M rocket from Baikonur. The manufacturer is Space Systems/Loral, based on the SSL 1300 platform. This is a reliable, well-proven platform: dozens of commercial satellites operate on it worldwide. The design life is 15 years. EchoStar 15 was deployed to strengthen HD capacity across the Dish Network fleet in the American market, where competition between Dish Network and DirecTV constantly drives operators to increase bandwidth.
Coverage Zones
All satellite beams are oriented towards North America. There is no spillover towards the Atlantic. Below are practical guidelines for antenna sizes across different zones:
| Beam | Coverage Area | Typical Antenna Diameter |
|---|---|---|
| CONUS | Continental United States | 45–60 cm |
| Alaska | Alaska | 75–90 cm |
| Hawaii | Hawaii | 75–90 cm |
| Puerto Rico / USVI | Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands | 60–75 cm |
| Ukraine / Europe | Reception impossible | — |
Signal to Alaska and Hawaii is at the edge of coverage, so 75–90 cm is not over-engineering but a genuine necessity. Over CONUS, a 45 cm Dish antenna performs reliably even in moderate cloud cover.
Transponders and Broadcasting Standards
EchoStar 15 operates exclusively in the Ku-band. The sathub database records 6 active transponders. Broadcasting uses the DVB-S2 standard with QPSK and 8PSK modulation — 8PSK specifically provides denser packing of HD streams within available bandwidth. The SSL 1300 platform has sufficient power budget to maintain all service zones simultaneously without signal degradation.
Content and Conditional Access
Almost all content is encrypted. Dish Network maintains transponders under a conditional access system: without a subscriber card and compatible receiver, there is nothing to watch. Open FTA channels at this position are virtually non-existent. The package includes HD general entertainment channels, regional US networks, sports and cinema subscriptions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I receive EchoStar 15 in Ukraine?
No, and it is not a matter of antenna size. Position 119.0° W above the Pacific Ocean produces a negative elevation angle for all of Europe — the satellite is physically below the horizon.
What antenna do I need in the USA?
For the continental area, 45–60 cm is sufficient. For Alaska and Hawaii, use 75–90 cm — at the coverage edge, the extra diameter makes a noticeable difference in poor weather.
What channels does EchoStar 15 broadcast?
Dish Network content: HD general entertainment, sports packages, regional US channels. Mostly encrypted with conditional access.
What receiver do I need?
A DVB-S2-compatible device with support for Dish Network's conditional access system. Universal FTA receivers will not work here.
